Mondariz confirms its title as “Best Water in the World” by receiving its second Diamond Taste Award

During the activities held at the Alimentaria Food Exhibition, Aguas de Mondariz confirmed its title as best still mineral water in the world after receiving its second Diamond Taste Award granted by Brussels' prestigious International Taste & Quality Institute (iTQi). This award confirms Mondariz water's unsurpassable quality and properties.

The event was held on Monday, April 25, at Barcelona's Gran Vía trade show facilities, during the Alimentaria 2016 food exhibition. It was presided over by the Belgian Consul, Mr. Didier Verwaerde, and was also attended by a number of the prestigious sommeliers that are part of the jury: Rosa Vila, Meritxell Falgueras and Elisabeth Vidal, as well as the chef Koldo Royo. They all participated in the evaluation of the products presented by performing a blind tasting, without wrappers or containers so that the jury could not identify the brand of the water they tasted in order to guarantee the test's objectivity and impartiality.

Water tastings are considered to be one of the most complicated tests, demanding maximum concentration required to find all the hues. They are performed individually, which is why they are carried out first thing in the morning. Vila, Falgueras, and Vidal, the female sommeliers participating in the iTQi tastings, both explained that “after overcoming the challenge of water tastings, you can relax and taste any other product.”

Last year the Mondariz still mineral water received the Diamond Taste Award, which is the maximum recognition granted by the ITQi, after receiving the maximum score by the Superior Taste Award for 7 years in a row. With this second Diamond, Mondariz confirms its title as “Best Water in the World,” becoming at the same time the only brand in the world to receive two titles in the category.

Ours is the first company in the world to achieve the highest award given by the iTQi of Brussels for six consecutive years

For the sixth year in a row, we have achieved the maximum score (3 gold stars) at the Superior Taste Award, a prize given by the International Taste & Quality Institute (iTQi) of Brussels. This award recognizes the Superior Taste and excellence of our products and reaffirms our place as one of the best brands of mineral water in the world.

As in previous editions, our natural mineral waters, both sparkling and still, earned the classification of “exceptional”, which is only achieved with a score of over 90 points out of a possible 100. Our sparkling water garnered 94.1 points, surpassing other sparkling waters participating in the competition.

A blind taste test was carried out to evaluate the products which were presented with no labels or commercial containers so that the brands could not be identified by the judges, thus ensuring objectivity. A total of 120 renowned chefs and sommeliers from the most prestigious culinary and sommelier associations in Europe are in charge of the tasting. At each edition there are different tasting experts. All of the members of the jury have been selected for their unanimously recognized talent in guides such as the Michelin or Gault&Millau.

Our mineral water has become the top-rated water in the world, having achieved the maximum score given by the Superior Taste Award for six years running. Next year, if we earn this rating again, we will be granted the well-known Diamond Taste Award. That would make us the first company in the world to have won this invaluable award as well.

We now hold Two Crystal Taste Awards

This year’s Superior Taste Award joins other important acknowledgements awarded by the renowned ITQi of Brussels to Aguas de Mondariz. In May 2012, our sparkling mineral water obtained one of the most outstanding awards that a product can achieve worldwide, the Crystal Taste Award. A year earlier, in 2011, we received another Crystal thanks to our still mineral water. These awards make Aguas de Mondariz the first and only Spanish company to achieve this important award on two occasions (only those companies that achieve the maximum rating of 3 stars, over 3 consecutive years, are presented with the Crystal Taste Award for the quality, taste and excellence of the product they present).

International Institute of Taste and Quality of Brussels

The International Taste & Quality Institute (iTQi) of Brussels is an independent organisation formed by renowned chefs and sommeliers from different countries, which was created to analyse, judge and promote the best food and drink in the world. With this aim in mind, the Superior Taste Award was created, which has the purpose of distinguishing the best tastes and the finest products.

In this edition, a total of 1,239 products were presented for the awards, of which only 20% obtained the maximum mark of three stars, rating the product as “exceptional”.

The products presented are judged in a blind tasting, with no packaging or bottles, which ensures that the panel of judges cannot identify the brand they are evaluating at any time. The tasting is carried out by a group of reputed chefs and sommeliers belonging to the most prestigious culinary and sommeliers’ associations in Europe, who are renewed every year. Each of the members of the panel was selected for the unanimous acknowledgement of their talent in guides such as Michelin or Gault Millau.
